Relocating is a complicated process involving much more than moving your belongings from one house to another. Use the following timeline to ensure a better experience.

The Day of the Move - Start Early
Unpacking
4-6 Weeks Before the Move
- Reserve moving truck and schedule help for your move
- Procure supplies. Order boxes and other supplies so that you will have everything you need.
- Start using up items you won't move, like perishable food and chemicals.
- Tour the house and decide which items, if any, might be discarded, donated or sold. Sort items to keep, donate, discard, and sell.
- Have a Plan - Set a goal to pack a certain amount of your belongings each day until all of your non daily use items are packed. Planning is key to a hassle free move - otherwise
you're likely to end up overwhelmed with many things needing to be packed just before your move.
3 Weeks Before the Move
- Arrange to have major appliances serviced before you move them.
- Use up, discard or give away unused chemicals and other items that should not be packed.
- Begin packing infrequently used items such as seasonal, garage, attic, and storage areas.
2 Weeks Before the Move
- Get change of address forms from the Post Office. An online Change of Address form is available on the United States Postal Service website.
- Alert the following of your address change: banks, brokerage firms, your employer’s human resources department, subscriptions, credit cards, insurance, and utility companies.
- Pack the bulk of your items.
- Arrange to be off work on Moving Day. Notify your office that you plan to supervise the move and need the day off.
- Confirm moving truck and help for your move.
1 Week Before the Move
- Print an information sheet for any helpers or movers. Include the old and new addresses, directions, and your cell phone number.
- Finish packing except daily need items. Pack Personal "Open Me First" boxes.
- Arrange utilities disconnection.
- Arrange connection of utilities at your new home.
The Day Before the Move
- Defrost, clean and dry refrigerators.
- Pack "Open Me First" boxes.
- Do a walk-through to make sure everything is packed.
- Proper payment - Professional movers will demand payment in full before
they will unload a single box. Make sure you have payment ready if
using their services.
- Get a good night's rest.
The Day of the Move - Start Early
-
Cell phone numbers -
Make sure you have exchanged cell phone numbers with your helpers and
entered them into your cell phone in case you
get separated or have a problem.
- Information Sheet - Provide information sheet, directions and a map to anyone driving between your old place and your new place.
- Tour new home with helpers to determine the most suitable route from truck to home.
- Test faucets, toilets, utilities, phones, smoke detectors, and security systems.
- Turn on water heater if necessary.
- Be available to answer questions, direct the placement
of your furniture and boxes, etc.
- Use sitters - Recruit help in watching your small kids and pets on Moving Day. Your attention will be needed for the nuts and bolts of the move.
- Have refreshments available - Whether you have professional movers or friends, having snacks and drinks available will make it easier for everyone to get started and keep moving.
- Begin to unpack. Flatten boxes and set aside in a secure, dry area.
Unpacking
- Have a Plan - Just like packing, have a plan for unpacking, otherwise you're likely to end up frustrated with a sea of half-opened boxes and your necessities still "missing in action."
- Prioritize Rooms - Focus on "Open Me First" boxes.
- Trash and Recycle Boxes - Keep at least one trash bag (for real trash) and one large empty box (for used packing materials) in each room BEFORE you start the heavy unpacking.
- Goals - Set a goal to unpack a certain number of boxes daily until all boxes are unpacked.
*Minimum order of $50 required for delivery and is restricted to the greater Tri-Cities WA area; fuel surcharge applies.
